STEL TSL LOSERS INTERVIEW

Lets start of with who you are. What do you write??

Most people know of me as stel, but stelr (sometimes stelar), as in fantastic, is the real name. some people think it's pronounced steeler and it pisses me off because i hate the steelers, go bolts! anyhow, as a train guy who usually has a few folks to paint with, if you can lose a letter to help the crunch, then it makes for a much more comfortable half panel, assuming there's 4 people or so painting the boxcar or whatever train car we're painting. taking one for the team, i guess.

-

What crews do you rep??

TSL (the slum lords) and losers. tsl came about in 1995. somewhere around the same time in southern cali another tsl was doing their thing but we didnt know about each other until too much work had been put in to make a stink about it. anyone who knows anything about trains knows the difference between the two. As far as losers goes, it's a more national crew. Folks spread out all over the country have made it up and some still do. As a lot of crews go a lot of bullshit has gone down over the years so the numbers are down, but it's still out there.

-

How did you come up with your name??

My sophmore year i decided to change my name for the last time, and i was going to commit to this by drawing it on my backpack. i decided upon setl because i liked that it was true i was going to settle on a final name. but in the midst of my hurry to finish, i spelled it wrong. thus the creation of stel. and in the mid 90's it was hip to put an R after your name, so, stelr it was.

-

How long have you been writing??

I got going in 1995. when i first started the scene i was introduced to was heavy into trains, so those were always the goal. but things were different then. you didnt just go straight to trains, you had to put in work, paint the streets and get good enough to not make a panel embarrass the city. At the time, the local yards were controlled by a few guys who had a lot of respect and made the call of who painted trains in the big boy yard. my main teachers feenk and closet, had the in, but i obviously had to pay my dues. i remember feenk taking my out to different layups that held mostly hoppers and tankers and just gettin loose on those things for who knows how many crappy pieces. i think though, i caught my stride when the major raids hit, cleaning house on a lot of guys who had been crushing. about that time a wave of folks rushed in and began the newest cycle. i'm sure there have been a few cycles since then. i will say, freights have always remained top priority for all of us.

-

How did you get into graff??

Feenk and my best friend went to school together and he'd come over to my pops with his blackbook and he had all these cool rock characters he'd been drawing at the time. i guess the idea of doing art in a new way was inspiring. all artists eventually end up as a genre artist, graffiti just became mine.

-

Tell us a bit about your style. How do you describe it? Any influences?

I like to think of my style as sharp and fluid. not too readable because i love the wildstyle, but readable enough so if its flying by at 70 miles an hour then someone who cares can read it. as far as influences, the first piece i ever bit was a pre piece in some magazine. i copied it exactly as it was, but it didnt influence me, just gave me the confidence to keep trying. feenk and closet influenced me the most. but of course, the root falls back to their influence and his influence. supposedly the influence for the entire city was from a guy in chicago that wrote orco. so i guess in the end, he was my influence as well. back when i was learning the interent wasnt hip. all we had was very biased magazines that we didnt realize were biased, to learn new tricks from. you could watch trains all day and the number of pieces you saw were laughable to what a single line of mixed freight holds today. i'll say in my impressionable style days kero made a big impact on what was possible for trains.

-

Would you consider your self a freight guy???

Absolutely. walls are fun, but freights are all i know.
What do you think about freights these days compared to ten years ago??
haha, kind of mixed really. with all the shortlines being introduced into the pool of freights, the possibilities of what may be in the yard are nearly limitless. since up and other rail pooling companies have been refurbishing fallen flagged boxcars, the freight scene for fans of railcars has blown up. when i first started you knew there would be golden west boxes of all kinds, up sp and wp standard rolling stock, and maybe an unknown or two. there was of course a bnsf spur that was always a treat to hit. the thing is, freights are graffiti. theres way too many people who have no business of trains. be it they suck, or just dont know what the hell they're doing. trains and walls cant be painted the same way. you can usually tell when a wall guy trys to paint a freight. his first will be a floater and either too wild for a freight, or too simple for his style. i noticed that when wall guys would try to paint a freight, especially a ridged boxcar, their flow gets messed up and they have to dumbie down their style and it never looks right. my favorite is when a guy is afraid to paint the bar! haha. they cry for five minutes and then have to fight the wood box and the ladder on the other panel so they end up scrunching their shit to avoid the door. my vote is to make walls cool again so i can have my frieghts back.

-

Who are your Favorite writers??

I'm a sucker for Kwest, but who isn't. i dont like naming my favorite writers because there's a lot of quality guys who deserve to have their name spoken. but i'll leave it up to personal opinion.
Who do you see up most up on freights these days?
this is another tough one because so many guys that paint the area have trains all over where i bench. plus, guys fall off and by the time you catch their stuff, they gone.

-

Any other hobbies besides graff??

Trains are a hobby. my wife and soon to be son. remodeling the house. enjoying my quasi-retirement from the game. most of all, traveling the world.
Any advice for younger writers coming up or just starting out on freights??
get good before you waste a panel. nobody enjoys going over garbage, just people you don't like. to be honest, i'd say find another hobby. this one is expensive and exhausing and highly addicting. you don't realize how important a little bit of fame and recognition can change your life. take up knitting.

-

Any shout outs??

Just to my firends and family who have had to put up with or help contribute to the building of stel...oh, and george strait for being the king of country.

The Cawz: Love, Freedom, Movement

fuckin throwback right here

POLICE ARREST GRAFFITI ARTIST "GIRAFA"

Found this on www.SFist.com

Before we begin, "Steven Free" is a far better name than "Girafa." It's action-packed! But since male artists love, love, love using stage names, he obviously had to get a new one; after all, he was committing illegal acts of painting. We digress.

Yesterday morning, San Jose police announced the arrest one of "the most prolific graffiti artists in the Bay Area," Steven Free, 30, most commonly known as Girafa. Free was nabbed on a $100,000 warrant, charged with "10 felony cases in San Jose involving $40,000 in damages."

CoCo Times reports, "During a search of his San Francisco home, officers discovered thousands of pictures of graffiti with the "Girafa" moniker and cartoon characters of giraffes on several of his social Web sites."

San Jose police officer Jermaine Thomas said that Free "was just causing a lot of vandalism around the Bay Area, anywhere he would find a spot, he would use this moniker." (What's wrong with a little, or a lot, of branding? Sheesh. The fuzz are a bunch of squares.)

Criminal mischief aside, his stuff looked nifty. What I'm Seeing interviewed him earlier this year. When asked why people loved/hated him so mich, Free responded, "I don’t know for sure. I try not to pay attention to it on both sides. It makes me laugh. You can’t escape it. Its part of graffiti [...] It’s not my job to try and change other people’s feelings about me. My job is to do what I do regardless of an audience and what they think."

LANGUAGE ARTS CREW

Language Arts Crew is a five-piece hip-hop group formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2001. Based in San Jose with a frontline of four MC’s and two heavy weight producers. Their style exhibits a lyrical depth, technique, and stage presence that has them on the cutting edge of the Bay Area underground hip-hop scene for the past three years. Their seven-inch single “Lazy Daze in California,” and full-length release ”Applied Knowledge” have both kept a stronghold in local record sales for several months despite the absence of label support. They have helped create a focal point for hip-hop fans along with a few other groups within San Jose’s relatively small music scene, giving an ever-growing head-count to a presently neglected circuit. They have also shared the stage with hip-hop Talents such as The Living Legends, The Visionaries, Sage Francis, Zion I, Aceylone, Ugly Duckling, Sacred Hoop, Hieroglyphics, Cali Agents, 2 Mex and The Earthlings. Their follow-up full-length album is expected to be released early 2008 and is predicted to meet fans with exponential success to its already well-received predecessor. Language Arts Crew continues to win the affection of crowds in their home town of San Jose and all across the west coast, bringing showmanship and a positive message to an increasingly supersaturated and mediocre hip-hop culture.

2864413260_84469cd8aa_o

How did you come up with your name??

I've always been into history, specifically WW2 for some reason...I first heard the name through Saving Private Ryan, which was one of my favorite flicks at the time. I was feeling the letters & once I looked up the meaning I had to have it.

-

Does Fubar stand for anything?

It's an acronym for Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition or repair. an old WW2 slang term.

-

How long have you been writing??

I've been tagging for about 7 years, painting probably 6 of those consistantley.

-

How did you get into graff??

I've always been into drawing things, then I started sketching letters..i didn't really have older dudes around me tagging or anything like that, it just happened I guess.

-

Is your style influenced by anybody or anything??

I'm influenced by a bunch of things in life. there's obviously alot of rad graffiti out there but I take all things into consideration, whether it's the shape of some building or the color of some tree, I'm always trying to think of new ideas.

I think it's sick, there's tons of spots, styles are fresh (in general), and the dudes that have been doing it for 10-15+ years always show you how it's done properly.

-

Who do you see up most in the bay??

no comment, people out there know who kill it.

-

What are you bumping in your Ipod??

All I own is a shuffle, but there's probably anything from the beatles to Guilty Simpson on there, I can listen to just about anything.

SINEK WA-FACT WH DROIDS INTERVIEW

SINEK WA-FACT WH DROIDS INTERVIEW

First off lets start off with who you are...what do you write and what crews are you down with??

I'm a simple dude is who I am. I go by Sinek and now also write my fallen brothers names as well Guilt and Phrite! I like 2 make it seem like when people catch a WA train that all 3 names are on it and you dont know if they painted it or I....lol...I love that it almost like there still here. No rip's no years..I'm down with WA-FACT, WH, Droids Familia.

-

You definitely rep quite a few crews....how did that come about??

Well myself and phrite made WA-FACT 4, then Guilt came along and was like lets make that our crew. Droids, Ridle asked me to be down after grinding with all the fellas in Ohio, great group of guys. WH, I painted with GSouth and Sicks on my journey around the U.S. and came back home got a phone call and they said take Ghouls out and crush. So I crushed with him for a while he put me down. He liked how we did things so....

-

Tell us a bit more about your crew WA-FACT..who's down with it and what does it stand for??

Well it stands for wrongfully accused - freeing a captured thought and other shit as well. In my heart the OG 3 - Phrite, Guilt and myself r WA-FACT....To the grave.

-

How did you come up with your name??

Late 90's I was tired of writing my names I had at the time. I was rockin' Siner and dropped the r....became sinek that's it....that was in 97 I believe.

-

How long have you been writing??

I got hip to graff in '94 but didn't paint my first piece till '96. Started painting trains in late '98.

-

How did you get into graff??
Through my boy Bionek 85. He showed me the movie Breakin and after that I was plugged in. Here I am today 15 years later. You can still catch me bustin a freeze if I'm drunk enough.

-

Influences graffiti wise??

There are a lot of people out there that fuckin do it, but in the early days when I started to paint it was 21rack....hands down...A2M, HM, Crispo, WH, FS, Network, Mayhem, Fgs.

-

-

Any other sineks out there? and if some do you beef with anyone of them?

I think there are a few but naw....I got no beef....I stay out of that shit...people know my shit from them...no need for me to get ass hurt or huff and puff. I just do my thing and like to paint. Disrespecting WA-FACT or fallen people know thats a different story...No good.

-

I know we see you up on a lot of fr8s out here...would you consider yourself mainly a fr8 guy??

Yea its the one thing I'm in love with on this earth and in this crazy fuked up life....I paint anything but you will always catch me rolling.

-

Favorite writers??

Too many to name that do it but off my head that do it for me now is all of HM, Much is a beast, all of A2M, FH crew, D30, NSF's, WH, KBT, STV, Network, FS, TCI.

-

I know you have traveled quite a bit...whats your favorite cities out there for painting??
Hmmm...the south was fun..Chicago, Cincy, Sac-town baby reeffas!

-

Lets get away from the graff shit a little...whats currently playing in your cd player/ipod??

I listen to all kinds of music. I got misfits, the smiths, the cramps, buzzcocks, fear, suzanne vega, shit load of 80's, fuking real hip hop like epmd, farside, eric b and rakim, bizmark, shit like that....fukin b-boy shit electro funk....big trance head, bt, pure, paul van dyke, sasha digweed, teisto, you heard my music library lol..

-

Any other hobbies besides graff??

Drinking and chilling, traveling, painting...

-

Any advice for younger writers coming up or just starting out??

Hmmmmm don't use the Internet, create a style that you made, don't follow the trend that someone else has made..alot of graffiti is starting to look all the same..just do you don't get caught up in bullshit...were not famous...we are just average people that paint shit.. egos are pointless...

-

Any shot outs??

To everyone I have come across in my life painters and others..also to my fallen brothers Roy and Glen....I miss you every day and love u guys..wa-fact por vida!

How old were you when you started graffiti?

I started the summer I turned 15.

Why did you even start graffiti? Did somebody get you into it?

I liked the art in the magz and I just loved tagging everywhere. It was a Good feeling.

Who were some of your influences and inspirations when you first started? Did anyone teach or guide you as you were painting?

I didn't have any idea of what I was doing for the longest time. Later on the Good Times crew helped each other out.

Who did you paint with then?

Drone and I started together and have been busy ever since, besides that I can't really get into all the names.

What crews were running the scene in Sacramento back then?

I don't know if any "one" crew was running sac. Back then. I could care less.

Did you bomb before you started hitting up pieces? How long were you bombing before you started piecing?

Yeah, I would say for about a year in a half or two years bombing was my life. It was all I knew back then. I liked to do big stuff, but nothing was ever tight.

Did you have more fun back in the bombing days or now in the piecing days?

Well, bombing is always fun. I would like to do a lot more of that, but I'm having a Good Time now trying to come fresher.

Do you think that there is a certain amount of time someone should be a bomber before they start actually piecing?

You can bomb all you want and never learn the proper can control needed for painting.

How often do you go out and paint?

My goal is at least once a week, which is often hard to reach with the crazy life I'm living now.

What kind of music are you listening to these days?

DE LA SOUL, KRS ONE, ROOTS.....A little classic rock, jazz, or whatever my lady forces me to listen to.

Does hip-hop music have any effect on your graffiti?

I can't say I'd be painting graff without it, but I have been majorly influenced by it. Besides that I can't draw without listening to some beats.

Do your parents know you graffiti? What do they think about it?

Yes, they understand that I'm a very independent person and I'm going to do what I want with my art. They just want me to be careful and stay out of trouble.

Do you think that graffiti is just like any other art?

It's not just like any other art for mainly just because of the disrespect, but it is the art form I know.

Why do you write graffiti?

If I've spent all this time trying to be good at something I should stick with it. I love to piece, and I also love the recognition I get for my art.

What do you think about the crack down on graffiti writers? Do you think that graffiti should be legal?

I like it how it is. That way the suckers will be scared to paint.

Do you think that graffiti gets as much recognition as other elements of hip-hop? Do you think it should?

I've got friends that are MC's and DJ's. They have told me many times that they think that graff should be the respected element of HIP-HOP. I kinda like going to shows and people think you're just you're some guy who aint even down for HIP-HOP. They look at you like you're just another kid that just bobs his head for no reason. People better that I walk deeper than that. Nobody knows me.

What's your favorite thing to paint on?

I like the surface of a freight train! I've been painting on walls lately; I can put a little more thought in and try new things.

I've seen some of your freights, how many do you think you've done?

Somewhere around a hundred, maybe more, maybe less. I really don't care for numbers. If I go paint a train now, I'm going to make sure it was worth losing a nights sleep for.

Who are you painting with these days?

I try to hook up with most anybody with skills. A lot of times I just end up painting by myself. I'm trying to get the crew together on some walls.

What do you think of the graffiti scene in Sacramento right now?

Well, it has pretty much died down after a lot of people got caught. Graffiti will never totally die, because there is always the new jacks.

What is up with everything being on the battling tip? What do you think about battling and this everlasting tension between graffiti writers striving to be the best?

I really don't know what everyone is battling for. I think Sacramento is just a city known to have a lot of shit talkers.

How important is style to you? Technique, color distribution, characters, back-rounds?

For me, I'm in to nice colors and letters. I think as far as characters, they all look like something RASK would have done in 94-95. In Sac. I haven't seen any back-rounds yet!

Are there any tips that you can give to those graffiti writers trying to come up?

· Put some 4x8 sheets of plywood in your backyard and practice.(don't bring your bullshit to the yard)

· Quit trying to be the best on paper. Oh-yeah, nice characters Mr. No Letters.

· Don't be scared to try something new. Originality is a must.

· Don't go over something if you can't burn it. If your not sure you can burn it, take some time and learn.

· Get some skills, because if you haven't by now your probably still talking your shit.

· This list could turn into a novel in no time. So much love to those who made it possible for us today and remember to have a Good Time.

"Nobody's the best, so everyone in Sacramento needs to chill with that talk. We all need to paint more and sketch more. Every time I paint I learn something new and so should you. We all know this town has a whole lot of learning to do. This is Jesol saying good bye and Good Times! 1999" If anyone sees STEW tell him to call me.
